Hi friends,
Welcome to the first edition of Being Indian and Christian.
In John 17:18, Jesus says that he is sending his disciples out into the world. A few verses earlier he says that his disciples do not belong to this world. This tension has always fascinated me. We are not to belong to this world and yet we are to "go into the world" as Jesus came into ours.
The world that Jesus sent me into was the world of India - a country that is rather unique in all the world. This was a privilege. And yet I realised I did not understand this world well enough. This newsletter is an attempt at understanding India and understanding what it would mean to be a Christian in a country such as India!
On 15th August, Independent India celebrated its 75th birthday this week.
In this first issue of Being Indian and Christian, I wanted to reflect on the independence of India.
The blog post I wrote this week focuses on the idea that God has created India out of love for the country. I also ponder about what response this could cause in disciples of Jesus.
The Gospel Coalition opened its India chapter earlier this year.
This is exciting news!
I have long believed that Indian Christians need resources to think Biblically about the world around them, and especially about the country in which they live. On Independence Day, Akshay Rajkumar wrote an excellent article on the idea of true freedom for India.
That's it for this edition. Hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
Caleb
